Southwest Airlines has grown from 12 flights a day to 7 cities in 1996 to become the largest individual carrier at Orlando International Airport ten years later. Southwest (NYSE: LUV) now has 93 nonstop flights daily to nearly 30 cities as well as direct or connecting flights to 26 more cities. Of the 31,000 people employed by Southwest, 1600 of them are based in Orlando including 718 flight attendants and 471 pilots. Orlando is Southwest’s busiest airport in Florida and its ninth busiest overall. The busiest airport for Southwest in terms of flights is Las Vegas.
The Orlando Business Journal ranks airlines by the number of passengers getting on or off a carrier’s plane in 2005. At OIA, Delta Airlines came in second and American Airlines was ranked third. The top 25 carriers can be found in this article.
