SeaWorld Set to Rescue Manatee Who Swam to Memphis
A 1000-pound manatee that left its warm waters has found the Mississippi River and is vacationing in Memphis.
How or why the manatee – also called a sea cow – found the Mississippi and swam up stream for 720 miles is unknown. Perhaps it went to see Elvis.
The SeaWorld Manatee Rescue team expects to rescue the mammal – called by Memphis locals – "Manny the Memphis Manatee."
The manatee, which has been living in Wolf River Harbor off downtown Memphis, will be brought back to SeaWorld.
SeaWorld maintains one of several rescue centers for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife manatee rescue, rehabilitation and release program.
The manatees in Orlando SeaWorld’s "Manatees: The Lost Generation?" habitat have all been rescued through a SeaWorld rescue team.
