El Buen Consejo – The Good Counsel

This story has captured the imagination of The Anguilla Top Team and we pass it along to you. El Buen Consejo was a warship attached to a fleet of 13 merchant vessels and 3 other warships leaving the port of Cadiz, Spain and going to the western gulf of Mexico at Vera Cruz. Aboard this ship were 50 Franciscan missionaries whose ultimate destination was in the Philippines. El Buen Consejo did not survive – the ship sank to the ocean floor and the cargo, including the religious artifacts of the missionaries, were dashed against the rocks.

In 1986, Mr. Leander "Bull" Bryan, a well-known Anguillan figure, located remnants of the shipwreck on the Atlantic side of northern Anguilla. He decided to explore – and only to explore. Thanks to his foresight, the Government of Anguilla has been able to designate the site as an Underwater Archeological Preserve. It is part of Anguillan maritime heritage.
