Rankings are based on 30 Florida counties. Osceola County: 13,804 acres of citrus, ranked 14th; 1,594,000 trees, ranked 15th. Lake County: 17,486 acres of citrus, ranked 13th; 2,415,000 trees, ranked 12th. Orange County: 5,594 acres of citrus, ranked 20th; 666,400 trees, ranked 20th. and, the big winner, Polk County, 95,050 acres, ranked #1; and 11,147,100 trees, 2nd in rank.

Anguilla National Trust Bus Tour on the island in the British West Indies

Increased Housing Starts in 2nd Quarter 2006

The article goes on to stay that housing starts (single-family new home construction) in the metro-Orlando area, that is, Orange, Seminole, Osceola and Lake counties, were up 3.2% over the same time last year. 8,580 homes were started.

Watch out for those ‘gators!

Alligator hunting is big-time fun for some people. This year 4,406 permits to hunt alligators are being issued statewide. Each permit allows for 2 alligators so people who want to snag an additional gator have to also buy an additional permit.

Hunting is allowed 1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunrise and the dates allowed for hunting are sometime between August 15th and November 1st, depending on the permit. Hunting alligators is usually accomplished from a small boat. Often the alligator is larger than the boat; the alligator which looks lifeless may not, in fact, be dead. All this is costly: a license is $272 for residents, $1,022 for non-residents, and a guide for this thrill starts at $1,200. See more.  The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission estimates 3,400 alligators in Lake Toho alone.
