Alligator hunting is big-time fun for some people. This year 4,406 permits to hunt alligators are being issued statewide. Each permit allows for 2 alligators so people who want to snag an additional gator have to also buy an additional permit.

Hunting is allowed 1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunrise and the dates allowed for hunting are sometime between August 15th and November 1st, depending on the permit. Hunting alligators is usually accomplished from a small boat. Often the alligator is larger than the boat; the alligator which looks lifeless may not, in fact, be dead. All this is costly: a license is $272 for residents, $1,022 for non-residents, and a guide for this thrill starts at $1,200. Six of them are elementary schools with a capacity of 830 students each and three are middle schools with a capacity of 1,215 students each. To put it another way, 402 new classrooms and 8,625 new seats are being added. Orange county is the 12th largest school district in the country.
