Orange County Convention Center on International Drive is taking shape with the Village of Imagine.

Centered around the new Universal Boulevard District and located opposite the Orange County Convention Center on International Drive, a new village is taking shape. Developed by Intrawest Corp., a Canadian developer of village-centered resorts (NYSE:IDR), the project will be called The Village of Imagine. It will be built as a master-planned development for both business and leisure purposes and will encompass nearly 30-acres.

The Westin brand will be the shining star of Phase I. Westin is planning The Westin Imagine Orlando Residences, 470 Westin branded condos along with 30 boutiques and restaurants. A 12-story luxurious condo-hotel called the Grand Imagine is also planned under the Westin name.

Westcott Lakes Continuing Care Community near Florida State University and once called Oak Hammock at the University of Florida

I remember reading some time ago that a trend among people of retirement age and better is to choose to live near a university. There, an older person may audit classes, perhaps even go for a degree, attend sporting events and become a fan of the local team, and, in general, enjoy the special energy of living near people of university age.

Along these lines, an article appeared in a recent issue of the Orlando Sentinel saying that a company named Praxeis is looking for a 30 to 50 acre site within a 15 mile radius of The University of Central Florida.

The intent is to build a 350-unit continuing-care community near the main campus in the eastern part of Orlando. This company has already built a community called Westcott Lakes near Florida State University and another one called Oak Hammock at the University of Florida. At Oak Hammock, homes range from studio apartment-size to over 2,500 square feet.

Celebrations galore at the happiest place on earth Walt Disney World in Orlando Florida

Both the Disneyland Resort in California and the Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista are planning a special salute to honor our men and women in uniform. At the Magic Kingdom, hundreds of cast members will join together to create an enormous patriotic banner on Main Street. Thousands of guests will wave flags. A 250-foot red, white and blue patriotic banner will be unfurled and later there will be fireworks near Cinderella’s Castle. A similar event will be happening at the same time on Main Street U.S.A. in Anaheim.

MetroWest in Orange County Orlando Florida may get a name change which could affect 12,000 residents.

The Orlando Avenue Top Team knew that Waterford Lakes, a community in east Orange County, was once called Huckelberry Fields (although we do not know whether or not there was fruit of the same name there) but we never knew that Orlando was once called Jernigan! Or that Orange Country was once Mosquito County!

Now it seems that MetroWest, the huge 1,800 acre planned community in Orange County, may be renamed Veranda Park. MetroWest is located off Hiawassee Road near Route 50 – also known as Colonial Drive. MetroWest has been known by its own name for 20 years. If the name is changed and if, for instance, MetroWest Blvd. becomes Veranda Park Blvd., many of the community’s 12,000 residents may be affected.

Solivita in Osceola and Polk County Florida is a 55 plus community growing with new floorplans and offerings in the coming year.

I remember going to Solivita when Avatar Properties began developing this community in 2001. There was a lot of land and very few houses and the Village Center which includes its Riviera Spa and Fitness Center was mainly a dream. Of course, in a few short years all that has changed and Solivita is a well-known and well-loved place to now call home.

Solivita is being developed on 47,000 acres in Poinciana, an area that includes both Osceola and Polk Counties. Houses in this "active adult community" start at just under $200,000. For people who love golf, there are two courses within the community. There are tennis courts, a state-of-the-art fitness center, indoor track, indoor and outdoor pools, a restaurant, and classes which fit many interests. Over 3,000 homes have already been sold and The Orlando Sentinel recently announced that 1,000 more homes are ready to be added. Prices will start at about $230,000 and go up to over $450,000. Eventually, Solivita will have about 6,500 homes.
