MetroWest in Orange County Orlando Florida may get a name change which could affect 12,000 residents.

The Orlando Avenue Top Team knew that Waterford Lakes, a community in east Orange County, was once called Huckelberry Fields (although we do not know whether or not there was fruit of the same name there) but we never knew that Orlando was once called Jernigan! Or that Orange Country was once Mosquito County!

Now it seems that MetroWest, the huge 1,800 acre planned community in Orange County, may be renamed Veranda Park. MetroWest is located off Hiawassee Road near Route 50 – also known as Colonial Drive. MetroWest has been known by its own name for 20 years. If the name is changed and if, for instance, MetroWest Blvd. becomes Veranda Park Blvd., many of the community’s 12,000 residents may be affected.

By the end of the summer we all can look forward to seeing Wet Seal, Silly Monkey, and Hat Shack, to name a few and Waldenbooks has now become Borders Express.

Solivita in Osceola and Polk County Florida is a 55 plus community growing with new floorplans and offerings in the coming year.

I remember going to Solivita when Avatar Properties began developing this community in 2001. There was a lot of land and very few houses and the Village Center which includes its Riviera Spa and Fitness Center was mainly a dream. Of course, in a few short years all that has changed and Solivita is a well-known and well-loved place to now call home.

Solivita is being developed on 47,000 acres in Poinciana, an area that includes both Osceola and Polk Counties. Houses in this "active adult community" start at just under $200,000. For people who love golf, there are two courses within the community. There are tennis courts, a state-of-the-art fitness center, indoor track, indoor and outdoor pools, a restaurant, and classes which fit many interests. Over 3,000 homes have already been sold and The Orlando Sentinel recently announced that 1,000 more homes are ready to be added. Prices will start at about $230,000 and go up to over $450,000. Eventually, Solivita will have about 6,500 homes.

Plan to attend the July 4th Celebration family parade at Celebration Florida.

I love a parade! A fun, family parade is the annual 4th of July parade in Celebration which models itself after the real old-fashionned parades of our dream of simpler days. This parade glories in its lack of sophistication! Dads push toddlers in strollers decorated with red, white and blue ribbons, dogs prance at the end of red, white and blue leashes, moms sit on floats with red, white and blue bunting, children sit on the curbs waving flags! The parade winds its way along the lakefront of Main Street in Celebration which is decorated with red, white and blue flags. It is fun!

Universal Studios New Closing Display

Starting the first of July, Universal Studios Orlando Florida is ending each night at the park with a new display. In the past, the parks closed with a display of fireworks. Now, though, the show will be bigger, more extravagant, and newly multi-media. Called "Universal 360: A Cinesphere Spectacular" it will combine music, lasers, lights, flamethrowers, videospheres, fireworks and video projectors.

Silly Stories

This perhaps goes under the heading of silliest stories this week. It seems that last year Old Spice ran a "sweatiest city" contest, officially called the Top 100 Sweatiest Summer City rankings. The contest ran again this year so it’s now the "second annual."

This year, Phoenix was the winner, sweatiest summer city in the country and Las Vegas came in second. Cities in both Texas and Florida ranked high on the list. The Orlando Avenue Top Team, real estate specialists with wisdom, knowledge and integrity, all perspire (or sweat!) As do I, The Orlando Avenue Top Team leader. We know that in our part of the country, it is hot!  We live in this area!

But we see a cooling thought here: In the dry heat of desert areas, as compared with our hot and humid Orlando weather, residents and visitors get  hot, sweat, and lose bodily water.  So The Orlando Avenue Top Team considers it a real plus that we didn’t win this contest!
