When it comes time to sell your home, you obviously want it looking its best so that prospective buyers will fall in love with it. This may lead to you consider touching up or remodeling parts of your home to make the best possible impression. If you’re trying to figure out the best parts of the home to give special attention to, there are a few places that buyers are more likely to pay attention to than others. Chief among these are the kitchen, the bathrooms and decks.
Considering the Kitchen
A lot of work goes on in the kitchen, so it makes sense that homebuyers want to make sure that the kitchen meets their needs. If your kitchen is dirty, cramped or outdated, that could raise a few red flags. Most potential buyers are looking for a big, open kitchen with modern appliances and usually a few key features like a dishwasher or kitchen island.
Obviously, your home doesn’t need to have all of these things to sell, and it may not even be realistic for you to make those sort of upgrades. Still, it’s possible to find a balance between a small, cramped kitchen and a potential buyer’s dream kitchen. Taking a moment to see how well your kitchen meets that balance can help you to see if there are any tweaks that you could make to improve the likelihood that a buyer will want to purchase your home.
A Focus on Bathrooms
The bathroom is one of the most important rooms in a house, and buyers want to be confident that things will work well in the bathroom when they’re in there. There’s a lot that goes on in the bathroom, though; beyond the obvious, this is also where people get ready in the morning, take their showers or baths, brush their teeth and sound their absolute best when singing along to a favorite song.
Because of this, there’s always a wow factor involved when a potential buyer sees a nice bathroom. This can be a combination of new and nice-looking fixtures as well as cleanliness, lack of obvious mildew or water damage, layout and things like adequate lighting and sufficient mirrors. Most bathrooms only have a limited amount of space to work with, but you’d be surprised how much of a difference you can make with a few tweaks and upgrades.
Enjoying the Deck
Not every home has a deck, but those that do always get oohs and aahs from potential buyers. A lot of homeowners want to be able to enjoy their time outside of their home, and having a deck can make this a lot easier since you can set up tables, chairs, a grill or anything else in a secure and flat area outdoors.
This isn’t to say that you have to build a deck to sell your house, though some sellers actually do make significant changes to landscaping and outdoor areas to spruce things up. If you already have a deck, take the time to make sure it’s recently painted or stained and is otherwise in good condition. A deck can make a big impression, but an ugly or damaged deck can make the wrong sort of impression on your potential buyer.
Sprucing Up the Whole Home
Obviously, there are other parts of the home that you can make changes or updates to if you’re getting ready to sell your home. General repairs, remodels or upgrades can interest potential buyers regardless of where they occur. But take care of any obvious damage, and then focus on the kitchen, bathrooms and decks, before you work on any other big areas.

Let’s face it we all have stuff we need to get rid of in our homes, and typically the kitchen has a ton of stuff that doesn’t need to be there lying around in it. Since we are currently in the cold of winter, there is no time like the present to start cleaning out your kitchen and making it look a bit more presentable. Below is a list of the top things you should purge from your kitchen.
- We all have one, a junk drawer and that junk drawer is many times located in the kitchen. It’s where we put all the items we have no idea what to do with but aren’t; quite sure we want to get rid of just yet. Take that junk drawer and go through it with a fine tooth comb and decide what you need and what you don’t need. Throw away all that you don’t need. Most times the things you don’t need are the items you haven’t used in the past 6 months. I promise you won’t miss anything.
- Another thing we all seem to have lying around our kitchens is all those restaurant sauce packets we feel the need to keep. Sure you might use one once in a while but most times they just take up space either in the junk drawer or in the refrigerator. Throw all the restaurant condiments out! It will make your kitchen look much lovelier.
- Yet another thing we all need to purge from our kitchens is the dressings, sauces and other items that have long since expired. There isn’t much worse than getting ready to put some sauce on your food only to find that it expired two years ago. Clean out your fridge and only keep those things that you are going to use within the next week or so or at least make sure that all the dates are current.
- Most everyone has some sort of a stack of lids in their kitchen that they just can’t seem to find a container for. If you have a bunch of lids that don’t have matching containers to secure them to, why not just throw them out. They no longer serve a purpose.
Hopefully this list of items you need to purge from your kitchen will get you starting thinking in the right direction. At least it will be a starting point for you.

The kitchen is a place in the home where many hours are spent preparing meals and spending time with family. If the kitchen is boring and not ecstatically pleasing to you or your family, no one is going to want to spend any time there. Below is a list of a few ways in which you can spruce up your boring kitchen and make it a place where you really love to be.
- One of the first ways you might think about to spruce up a boring kitchen is buying new appliances. The typical type of appliance these days is stainless steel. Another type of appliance that folks are using these days are the ones that look just like cabinets. Whatever type of appliance you decide to buy, you will be helping your kitchen look as good as it possibly can.
- Another way to spruce up your kitchen is by changing the paint color. If your kitchen is older, it is possible that the paint has gotten worn over the years and adding a pop of color with new paint can make all the difference in the world.
- Yet another good way to spruce up a boring kitchen is by changing the cabinets. You can choose to have all new cabinets put in or you could just change the way they look by painting them. Antiquing is a popular way to refinish and spruce up furniture. Antiqued cabinets are very beautiful and can make a kitchen look really nice.
- Buying some new lighting for your kitchen is an easy way to spruce it up. You can get as crazy as you want with lighting when it comes to making your kitchen an exciting place to be. Go to your local hardware or lighting store to see what all is available for you to choose from.
- New flooring in the kitchen is another way to make it look updated. If you currently have laminate you may want to change it to tile, or you could choose to extend the hardwoods from the family room or whatever room adjoins the kitchen into the kitchen.
These are just a few ideas for sprucing up a boring kitchen. Hopefully they will get you started in the right direction for making your kitchen a room that everyone wants to congregate in.
