National Moldy Cheese Day – October 9th

October 9th, 2020 by tisner

National Moldy Cheese Day is a unique holiday that is observed each year on October 9th.

A cheesemonger is a person who specializes in cheeses, butter, and other dairy products. They may take umbrage at the ordinary person’s offense of moldy cheese. Well, depending on the type of mold, of course. Some cheese molds, red or brown-tinged molds, for example, are offensive. Toss those bacteria-contaminated moldy cheeses in the garbage quickly and move along to the grey, blue, or green colored moldy cheeses in the fridge instead.

Like a sommelier pairs the best wines with meals, a cheesemonger provides expert advice on artisan cheeses for recipes, banquets, and sources for restaurants.

Cheeses such as Maytag blue, Roquefort, Brie, bleu, camembert, gorgonzola, and Stilton are a few of the moldy reasons cheese lovers celebrate on this day.

Moldy cheese gets such colorful phrases. For example, the fuzzy mold on a wheel of fresh brie is called cats fur. These bloomy rind cheeses take some careful maintenance. However, the results are satisfying. Isn’t the best food is a bit of a science experiment, anyway?

Gorgonzola cheese is made with three different kinds of mold spores. It’s like a milder blue cheese, but gorgonzola is creamier and earthier. Toss it with pasta and mushrooms for an outstanding meal. Also, it compliments any cheese plate. Add apples and tart, dried cranberries.

HOW TO OBSERVE #MoldyCheeseDay

Stop by a local deli or chat with your favorite cheesemonger about a uniquely moldy cheese. Invite friends for a tasting and use #MoldyCheeseDay to post on social media.

Is It Safe To Travel Again?

October 8th, 2020 by tisner

Whether to travel or not is a difficult choice to have to make. While I can’t make the risk assessment for you, I can try to provide you accurate information to help you with your decision.
As far as travelling goes, driving is absolutely preferable to flying.  Your points of contact with other people will be limited to rest stops, dining, and overnight accommodation.  The CDC’s current guidance is that transmission of the disease chiefly occurs during close contact worth an infected person, when infected respiratory droplets can land in the mouth or nose, or enter the lungs.  In general, the more closely a person interacts with others and the longer that interaction, the higher the risk of COVID-19 spread.  By limiting your interactions with others and observing protective measures such as wearing a face covering and frequently washing and/or sanitizing your hands, you can significantly lower the chances of becoming infected.  So on a road trip for example, pay at the pump when refueling so that you do not have to stand in line inside and interact with a cashier.  Wear a face covering if you have to go inside to use a restroom.  Maintain at least 6 feet of distance from other customers.  It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes. This is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads. Avoid touching surfaces unnecessarily, wash your hands thoroughly, and avoid touching your face if you do use a public restroom.  Keep hand sanitizer or sanitizing wipes in your car so that you can clean your hands again once you are back in your vehicle.
I would avoid dining in restaurants, and rely instead on fast food or carryout options.  There is little evidence to suggest that the virus is transmitted through food preparation or handling.  The brief time that you interact with a cashier at a pick up counter or drive thru window is not likely to allow for sufficient exchange of viral material to cause infection.  However with in-person dining, even with outdoor seating you run the risk of greater exposure times with the volume of people around you and the length of your stay. If your lodging option provides a kitchenette, consider bringing food with you to prepare or purchasing food at a grocery store and preparing it yourself.
Regarding lodging, there is little evidence to suggest that the virus is being passed from a previous occupant of a hotel room to the next.  I imagine most hotels have adopted strict cleaning protocols to deal with COVID-19.  You should contact the establishments you are considering and inquire about their sanitization protocols.  You could bring sanitizing wipes with you and wipe down the hard surfaces in your hotel room upon your arrival.  An alternative to staying at a hotel/motel is to consider using AirBnB, which is a private home rental service.  Personally, I have had great experiences using AirBnb.  It is often cheaper than a hotel, and you can communicate directly with the owners before booking to inquire about their cleaning procedures, as well as being able to see when the last occupants of the place were there.  Usually when checking into and staying at an AirBnb you will never have to interact in person with the owner, which may be more desirable then having to walk through a lobby or hallways of a hotel, or interacting with front desk staff.
As you mentioned, your biggest risk of exposure might be once you arrive and are staying with/visiting family members.  You will have to thoroughly discuss these issues with our family members: what exposure they all have, what prevention techniques they use.  Is it possible for everybody to get tested soon after your arrival?  Can you stay long enough to quarantine first before visiting the sick friends?  Can the people you are visiting make any changes to their lifestyle before and during your stay that will serve to protect you?  Can your visits be socially distanced, perhaps outdoors?  Can you all wear face coverings and limit the duration of your visits? These and other questions should be addressed to help you decide whether it is appropriate or worthwhile to make the trip.

What Not To Do After Buying a New House

October 6th, 2020 by tisner

There is always excitement in buying a new home! While the up-front expenses can be stressful, the visions new homeowners see for their house can cause them to forget about necessary situations that should take precedence.  Let these helpful tips keep you on the right track after becoming homeowners:

  • While your new house has had a thorough inspection, you may want to go through that list and begin planning for items the inspector may have noted would need repair soon. Get estimates for the fixes and begin saving now.
  • Assuming the former owner kept everything in tip-top shape and not performing your own monthly or seasonal inspection is never a good idea. Print this handy checklist, and use it for DIY inspection and maintenance so you stay a few steps ahead of a major repair need.
  • Beginning any major work as soon as the moving truck leaves the driveway may be too soon!  Live in the home for a while and learn its quirks and possible trouble spots before drawing plans and hiring a contractor.  Finding an unforeseen issue with the house after work has begun can cause more financial burden.
  • Renovation television shows make DIY tempting, to say the least.  If you have no experience in a major remodel, leave it to the pros.  Paying the right person to do the job could save you thousands in “mistake” money.
  • A total overhaul of your decor as soon as you move in can put a dent in your wallet. Personalizing your home is best done room-by-room or whatever is easiest on your budget. Living space furniture with new slipcovers, new stylish pillows, and a fresh coat of paint on the walls should satisfy anyone who is itching to make their home “theirs.”
  • Probably the furthest thing from new homeowners’ minds is their future tax returns, but not keeping receipts and all other financial forms related to your home purchase could hurt come tax time. Consider hiring an accountant or tax preparer when the time comes.

Getting used to your new budget should be your priority.  Utility bills and other expenses may be more than you have ever experienced and getting behind at the beginning is not the way to start your home-owning journey.

Pumpkin Carving 101: Carving Tools

October 1st, 2020 by tisner

Gone are the days of using Mom’s best kitchen knife to carve a simple jack o’ lantern with triangle-shaped eyes and a toothy grin.  Pumpkin carving is an art for many, but even those who are not so talented in that department can fake it with all of the tools and tricks available!

Pumpkin carving kits are available at many retailers, and you do not have to invest more than $20.00. Basic kits usually contain a utility saw, hand “drill,” and scraper.  Pumpkin Masters is the leading producer of carving tool kits, and you can be certain your kit will be perfect for the beginner or the experienced carving artist!  Their basic toolset, along with other decorating kits, can be purchased for less than $15 at Lowes home stores.

If you are in the market for a beginner kit, such as a child-safe set, Best Products has a list of beginner sets, as well as other gadgets and tools that would be more fitting for adults.  All of these items are $25 or less.

If you are ready to step up your carving mastery, there are plenty of tools that are not necessarily made for carving large orange squashes but work well for creating a professional-looking piece of pumpkin art. Check out these picks from Bustler,  which includes a set of pottery tools, a cookie-cutter kit, and a power drill set, all perfect for creating the perfect jack o’ lantern.

Different tools create different results:  children can use metal cookie cutters to punch out shapes; for a lantern look, use a power drill and different-sized bits; and if you want to make your pumpkin look like a work of art, use a set of linoleum tools.

Gathering your pumpkin and tools are just the beginning! Stay tuned for more Pumpkin Carving 101, when we discuss choosing a template, carving your artwork, as well as keeping your jack o’ lantern fresh!

National Daughters Day – September 25th

September 25th, 2020 by tisner

When it comes to offspring, National Daughter’s Day reminds of the young women and girls in our lives. On September 25th, spend time with your daughter.

Daughters bring a certain kind of joy into our world. Like all children, they have their own personalities and strengths. As parents, we look forward to discovering the world through their eyes.

Depending on where you live, International Daughter’s Day is observed on the Fourth Sunday in September. Elsewhere the day might be observed on October 1st. No matter when you celebrate, the day provides an opportunity to show your daughter genuine support, encouragement, and love.

In some countries, daughters face a rough start in the world. They are sometimes denied an education, equal employment or even healthcare. Sons are put before them and given priority. Social stereotypes set certain expectations of behavior for daughters including how they dress and behave.

The day offers us an opportunity to be thankful for our daughters and to find ways to ensure daughters around the world have every opportunity to succeed.

HOW TO OBSERVE #NationalDaughtersDay

Share the day with your daughter. Look back on memories or create new ones. Some other ways to celebrate the day include:

  • Send your daughter a card.
  • Take a selfie every year on National Daughter’s Day. Over the years, you will be able to see how much she and you have changed.
  • Donate to an organization that supports educating daughters. For example, Women One provides support to women and girls worldwide. Another is Helping Women Period which supplies feminine products worldwide.
  • Teach your daughter something new. Whether it’s useful or fun, practical or vital, your daughter will appreciate you for it.
  • Learn something from your daughter. Our daughters’ growing catalog of experiences offers us a treasure trove of information that they will gladly share with us.

While you’re celebrating daughters and YOUR daughter, be sure to share your day with us, too. Use #NationalDaughtersDay to post on social media all the ways you celebrate.

Remodeling for High ROI

September 24th, 2020 by tisner

Remodeling can be serious business, especially if you’ve got several pet projects on your list and a limited budget with which to work. It can be tempting to go straight to the items that you find the most important, but if you’re considering reselling your home in the not too distant future, the return on your remodeling investment is really the thing to watch. Luckily, Remodeling Magazine has been tracking remodeling trends and returns for the US market since 2002 and has amassed a great deal of data on which projects you should focus your money on if you’re concerned about how well it will return.

A Note on Cost Return Versus Resellability

It’s important to note that there is a distinction between items that will be reflected in your home’s value and those which will help your home sell. These aren’t always the same thing. For example, you might find that adding a pool is a lot of fun and that people are drawn to homes with pools in your area, but a pool doesn’t necessarily increase the amount of money you’ll be offered for your home. On the flip side of that, new kitchen cabinets almost always both increase value and help make your home easier to resell.

This Year’s Top Remodeling Items for Returning Your Dollars

Remodeling Magazine’s 2020 numbers are in, and much of what they have to say isn’t too surprising. Over the last several years, trends for return on your investment dollars have been mostly holding steady. Consider these items if you’re planning a remodel before you sell your home:

  1. Manufactured Stone Veneer. This year it’s number one on the list, though it was ranked second in both 2019 and 2018 for percentage of cost recovered. At an estimated $9,357 for the average stone veneer project, you’ll see an average of 95.6 percent return.
  2. Garage Door Replacement. Bumped from number one for 2018 and 2019 to a still respectable number two, garage doors will provide an average of 94.50 percent return for your average $3,695 project. Garage doors can change the entire face of your home, so they’re still a great choice for a quick facelift if you don’t have stone veneer money this year.
  3. Kitchen Remodeling. It’s no surprise that a nice kitchen can pay for itself, but you have to be very careful in how you spend your money. A minor, mid range kitchen remodel might include small updates like replacing the drawer, door fronts, and hardware on cabinets, as well as new appliances, flooring, and sink and faucet, plus a fresh coat of paint. That’s estimated to cost about $23,452 this year, but the return on it will be about 77.6 percent. This is also one of those items that will absolutely push a buyer to choose your home over another, so there’s value beyond simple dollars and cents.
  4. Siding Replacement. In the past, Remodeling Magazine has grouped all major siding types (excluding stone veneer) together, but this year it has separated them into two categories: fiber-cement and vinyl. Both are popular, durable choices for a home, and both return quite well. Fiber-cement should recoup about 77.6 percent of the $17,008 bill; vinyl returns about 74.7 percent of an estimated $14,359.
  5. Vinyl Replacement Windows. Replacement windows can be a huge selling feature, especially if your home is in a neighborhood where a lot of houses still have their original windows. They can be ordered with a myriad of design elements to make them just as charming as the windows you’ll be replacing, down to the tiniest details. You’ll be looking at a cost of around $17,641 for the project, but you’ll recover about 72.3% of that when you sell your home. As a bonus, the new homebuyers will have plenty of incentive to choose your home, since energy efficiency is still a major decision point.

Fix That Leaky Roof!

September 22nd, 2020 by tisner

Drip. Drip. Drip. It is pouring rain outside, and you hear that dreaded sound coming from somewhere inside your home. Grabbing the mop bucket to place under the leak will save you from a mess but drying the floor and putting the bucket close by for the next rainstorm is not where you need to stop. Leaving a leaking roof untouched can be detrimental to your health, home, and investment.

  • Sometimes you may not notice dripping water, but will see bubbling drywall or plaster, or simply a change in the color of the paint.
  • If you find a drip and have retrieved something to catch water, your next step should be to try and find where the leak is. Open the attic door, and with a flashlight, look around for the dripping water or wet areas.
  • Do not be tempted to place something to catch the water in the attic. The container can become too full and heavy, and come crashing through the ceiling.
  • While a downpour or thunderstorm is not the time to go outside, once it is safe to do so, go outside and look up the roof’s slope from the area where the leaking was.
    — If it is not obvious, you may have to wait to create your own “rainstorm” with a water hose or call a pro to locate the problem.
  • If the leak is on a flat area of the roof, secure a tarp over the leak to stop more water from coming in.  Sometimes the leaks are around a vent or chimney, and those can be tricky, so you may not be able to make a temporary fix until the roofer arrives.

  • Whether you DIY the roof repair or call a roofing contractor, the attic will need to be dried out.
    — Use a dehumidifier to absorb the moisture in the air coupled with a large fan to dry the area.
    — Inspect surrounding insulation and make certain it is completely dry before you put it back in place. If it has become compacted, it will need to be replaced with new insulation.
  • Leaving a leaky roof with a temporary patch, or worse, doing nothing at all can cause expensive and dangerous problems.
    — Mold and mildew can grow not only on the roof, but inside the attic, and possible down to the ceiling and walls.
    — Wood under the shingles and on the roof, joists can rot, causing an expensive replacement.
    — Drywall and plaster are not meant to be wet, and the moisture can cause them to become weak. No one wants collapsing ceilings or walls.
    — Water can get into the home’s wiring, causing copper wires to degrade, and in turn causing an electrical short or even a fire.

As soon as a leak is discovered, repairing it yourself is fine if done correctly.  You may be pleasantly surprised at how easy it can be for a pro to stop a small leak, and the price of the repair will not be very high.  However, the cost of a professional making a repair to a leaking roof cannot compare with keeping your home’s largest and most important structure safe and sound as well as keeping your family safe and healthy.

National Cheeseburger Day – September 18th

September 18th, 2020 by tisner

National Cheeseburger Day on September 18th honors America’s favorite sandwich with a slice of cheese.
A few days ago, we celebrated National Double Cheeseburger Day. This food holiday is the lighter version. While only a single stack, this tasty burger still earns a celebration!
There are many theories to the beginning of the cheeseburger dating back to the 1920s. One story suggests that Lionel Sternberger invented the cheeseburger in 1926 while working at his father’s Pasadena, California sandwich shop, The Rite Spot. During an experiment, he dropped a slice of American cheese on a sizzling hamburger.
However, like numerous iconic foods, many people and restaurants claim the origin story. For example, a restaurant in Los Angeles called O’Dell’s placed the cheeseburger on their menu in 1928. It came smothered with chili – all for the price of a quarter. Kaelin’s Restaurant in Louisville, Kentucky claims they invented the cheeseburger in 1934. One record that gives the Humpty Dumpty Drive-In in Denver, CO bragging rights is the trademark they received in 1935 for the name “cheeseburger.” Another who applied for a trademark of that word was Gus Belt, the founder of Steak n’ Shake. Sometime in the 1930s he also applied for the trademark.

Despite all these claims, a couple of things are for sure. The cheeseburger checks all the marks for satisfying a craving, and the cheeseburger isn’t going anywhere!

HOW TO OBSERVE #NationalCheeseburgerDay

Grill up or fry up your favorite cheeseburger. You don’t even have to cook. Visit your favorite burger joint and order up a delicious cheeseburger. With all the options available, you’re sure to find one that fits your taste.
